As a Sydney raised songwriter/artist Aya has attained and received many
accomplishments and accolades in his native land of Australia. Now based in
the US, Aya brings his deep musical legacy with him, and builds on it in his
new home of Los Angeles. With a wide musical knowledge, undeniable vocal
talents, A-list songwriting skills and years of band experience, he is now
helping to create the new musical landscape of Southern California.
The Music of Aya Larkin and his new band, is a showcase of his powerful, clear
and vibrant vocals; His songs are lyrically strong and empathetic. Layered by
the band's rich melding sound, encompassing guitar, piano/keys(Joel Stites),
bass (Gordon Bash)and drums(Chris Markwood). These are songs infused with
emotion and soul, which can stir or soothe a listener. His development as an
artist continues.
From 1992-2002, Aya fronted the Sydney-based band Skunkhour. In a decade
of climbing and inhabiting the Australian charts, they put out four albums &
two EPs. Their first album (independently released) gained critical acclaim and
a large fan base that lead to major labels Sony & Universal releasing the
following titles ; "Feed", "Chin Chin" and "the Go".
Through extensive touring, Skunkhour traveled the world and enjoyed
widespread popularity, releasing albums in the UK, Europe and Japan. Aya's
writing and vocals were a signature mark and major part of their sound. With
one album to go on their Universal contract, the group disbanded and Aya left
Australia to explore a separate direction.
Since leaving Skunhour, Aya has been commissioned to compose original
music for three major stage productions ; "A Clockwork Orange", "Hamlet" and
"The Shape of Things" in Sydney’s Bangarra, Belvoir St. and Sydney Theatre
Companies respectively – for which he won a Critic's Choice Award from the
Sydney Sun-Herald), performed vocals alongside internationally renowned Djs
from all over the world (Blade & Roy Davies Jr. to name a few…), appeared on
multiple albums as a guest vocalist (including for the Australian group Our
House, covering Tears for Fears’ "Shout") and had original tracks "Just" and
"Stay" recently released on the compilations; "Bondi Calling 2" and "3"
respectively. He is also about to appear on Ministry of Sound’s Poxy Music 2007
release as a guest vocalist and co-writer on the track "Home".
Aya has found his true calling here in LA; writing, recording and performing
with his new band in some of Southern California's best venues. Recent shows
incl; the Roxy, Hotel Cafe, the Mint, and Molly Malone's, and using his
songwriting talents for other US and Australian pop acts, having collaborated
with A-list writers such as Jamie Houston and Jeff Trott. He is currently
working with the up and coming production duo Heroes and Villians , samples
of this union are soon to appear on this site.
